KAPIT: Director of Sarawak Development Office Datuk Hasnul Mohamed paid a working visit to SK Ulu Yong over the weekend to attend the briefing of the recent fire that destroyed one block of boy’s hostel and one unit of semi-detached teacher’s quarters built adjacent to one another.

He also handed over the RM5,000 to the school to assist those boarders who lost their belongings in the fire.

Headmaster of SK Ulu Yong Mege Ujan on behalf of the students received the government outright cheque from Hasnul.

Later, Hasnul attended the briefing by the headmaster on the school who also gave an account of the fire outbreak.

Also attending the briefing were senior government officials and local longhouse chiefs.

Thus far, assistance has been received from Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat who handed over an immediate cash relief of RM5,000. He also announced his joint efforts with

the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumers’ Affairs Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi to help clear the debris left behind after the fire as well as to reinstall the electricity and water supply.

Meanwhile the Chairman of Kapit District Disaster Management Committee Cerisologo Sabut who is Kapit District Officer, also chipped in RM5,000 from the committee.

Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak handed over RM1,000 cash assistance while the Women Bureau of PBB Kapit donated 70 units of school bags for the students.

Fire razed two units of buildings, namely a boy’s dormitory and a teacher’s quarters at the school around 11:30pm on Wednesday evening last week.

The two wooden structure buildings that were built adjacent to one another were engulfed by fire within very short time.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze.

SK Ulu Yong was built in 1975.  Current there are 91 pupils and thirteen teachers including the headmaster in the school.

The school is the only primary school in Ulu Sungai Yong. There are ten longhouses along Sungai Yong sending their children to the school. They are Rumah Empawi, Rumah Manok Mancak, Rumah Memaloh, Rumah Lapek, Rumah Bilong, Rumah Untang, Rumah William Unchat, Rumah Janduk, Rumah Ngelai and Rumah Janan.
