KUCHING: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU) may have a slim chance of winning should it be given the opportunity to contest in the 15th general election in Sarawak.
Universiti Malaya political analyst Prof Madya Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said this is because it has yet to get much grassroots support in the state.
“If BERSATU contests in the next general election, their chances of winning are slim and this will further damage their reputation.
“This may also have a negative impact on the long-term political relationship between the party and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS),” he said when asked about the chances of BERSATU winning the general election.
He further said that even opposition parties such as Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak which have been established for a long time, it was still difficult for them to get the support of the local grassroots.
“Apart from that, any cooperation between GPS and other parties will be decided by consensus through GPS meetings and decisions are not made by any individual specifically.
“Plus, the GPS chairman has announced the party’s stance (that the party will contest in all 31 parliamentary seats),” he said.
