KUCHING: Eight students from SM Sains Kuching made the country and Sarawak proud after winning several medals in the final round of the International Applied Biology Olympiad (IABO) 2022 in Bali, Indonesia.

IABO 2022, which was held from June 30 to July 3, was attended by 16 countries, with participants from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Peru and Bangladesh making it to the finals.

SM Sains Kuching was represented by a team called SainsKu and managed to take home the main prize along with two more gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

The student who managed to win the grand prize and gold medal was Angelina Andrew Ragai.

Meanwhile, Anissa Christy Mojik and Phildenia Shiavonie Paulus each won gold in the final round.

Also returning home with honours were Nur Zuyyin Muhamad Adzhar and Shazriel Iman Shaharudin, who each bagged a silver.

Three other members, Wiro Andy Alfred, Theodore Morcelli Lawrence Macwell and Nurul Kamila Abu Bakar, took home bronze medals.

IABO is an international competition platform where students from grades nine through 12 compete.

The questions are prepared in line with the educational philosophy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and creative and critical thinking.

In the finals, only 120 people were selected from 16 eligible countries.
