KUCHING: Residents in the Rantau Panjang area will soon enjoy better mobile coverage and internet service with the commissioning of a new communication tower there recently.
It was initiated by Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) with the collaboration of local telecommunication service providers.
“The Rantau Panjang community had been facing poor mobile services for years,” it said in a statement.
“There are (primary and secondary) schools within this linear shape area that urgently need better connectivity to ensure online classes and multimedia teaching equipment can connect to the internet all the time to facilitate the teaching process.
“Apart from the schools, there are quite a number of villages, farmhouses, light industries, fruit gardens and so forth in this area.”
It added that with the installation of the new communication tower in the area, it narrows the wireless gap and fills the network blind spot by enhancing the connectivity coverage.
“This is to ensure the development of an intelligent urban ecosystem to be achieved for Kuching Smart City and digital led high income state for Sarawak in 2030,” it said.
It stated that SMA had undergone a few rounds of discussion with the network service providers to resolve the issue and eventually Maxis took the lead and requested their network facility provider to erect the telecommunication structure in the area and later set up their equipment to serve Rantau Panjang.
“Other network service providers, Celcom-Digi and Umobile will follow Maxis to expand and enhance their services in this area to ensure all can equally enjoy good connectivity regardless of the service providers they are using,” it said.
It added that SMA had ended the long wait for people in Rantau Panjang to hope for better mobile connectivity.
“The communication tower was put up last week and mobile connectivity will soon be ready to transmit the signal once the equipment is set by the service providers,” it added.
