KUCHING: The Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) is collaborating with the Land and Survey Department (LSD) to create big data for Sarawak’s land.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that the state’s topography and soil structure would be analysed, and that the information gathered would assist in future development.
“For example, there would be information on the soil structure and topography if we were intending to build highways.
“If there is a hill in the middle of where the road will be built, the information supplied will assist the authorities in deciding whether to build a tunnel to cut across the hill or not,” he said.
He said this during the ‘Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri and Mantar Gawai SMA 2022’ at Hilton Hotel here, yesterday.
On another note, Abang Johari, who is also SMA chairman, said Sarawak and its people must take use of the tremendous digital opportunities available.
He said according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the country generated RM279 billion in terms of revenue from e-commerce in 2020, with a 17 per cent increase in the third quarter of last year.
“In 2020, e-commerce contributed 11.5 per cent in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in comparison to 8.5 per cent in 2019.
“Moreover, it was predicted that digital economy will contribute approximately 25 per cent of the global GDP, equating to a value of 25 trillion USD,” he said.
As such, he stated that the state government is improving and upgrading facilities such as connectivity in order to meet the 2030 targets.
“In order to move forward, knowledge must be enhanced and people must be familiar with technology,” he said.
During the event, Abang Johari also handed SMA Club’s contributions to three community-based rehabilitation centres (PPDK), namely PPDK Gedong, PPDK Sri Satok and PPDK Betong, each of which received RM5,000.
