BINTULU: Smart Taekwondo Club (WTF) Bintulu continued to excel when they won 34 gold medals, 23 silver medals and 28 bronze medals in the Sarawak State Taekwondo WTF Championship 2017 competition held at SJK Chung Hua No. 4 Kuching recently.
A total of nine teams from throughout Sarawak namely from Kuching, Bintulu, Saratok, Sibu, Meradong, Lawas, Samarahan, Dalat, Sarikei and Miri participated in the championship in sparring and poomsae categories.
According to the head coach of the team, Pui Jak Joon, a total of 73 participants from Bintulu participated in the tournament and accompanied by seven teachers.
“The tournament was very tough due to the presence by strong athletes and some participants in Sukma,” he said.
According to him, the Bintulu team are confident with their performances and believed they will likely represent Sarawak either in the SEA Games 2017 or Sukma 2018.
Earlier he said, in Sukma 2016 three Bintulu athletes won gold medals in taekwondo namely, Marylyne Bungan Lian, Nurul Hidayah and Augustine Rudy.
“For the SEA Games in August later, we are proud because Nur Ifa Husna, Nurul Hidayah and Marylyne Bungan will participate,” he said.
He hoped Smart Taekwondo Club Bintulu will help to produce more Bintulu athletes who will contribute gold medals for Sarawak in Sukma 2017 and join the national team to represent the country.
