SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) aims to provide efficient and effective municipal services to improve the quality of life in a sustainable and livable way, with the help of communities, businesses, and stakeholders. This is in line with its mission to transform Sibu into a sustainable and livable city by 2031.
According to Cr Richard Ting Ping Kiong, the Standing committee chairman for Public Health, Environmental & Municipal Services, cleanliness is a top priority for municipal services.
The Council has increased efforts to ensure that commercial areas in urban and suburban communities are orderly, tidy, and clean. He made this statement during a press conference at SMC’s premises on July 5th.
Ting explained that public spaces within commercial areas, such as five-foot ways, open drains, open malls, footpaths, roadways, and parking bays, will be maintained and kept clean daily.
He also mentioned that the Central Business District’s roadways and parking bays are cleaned once a week using a sweeper cum washer truck.
Ting reminded all business operators and the public to comply with SMC’s contractor Zone 1 by Syarikat Masjaya at contact number 013-9235643 when the sweeper cum washer truck is in operation, usually after 9 pm till 5 am.
All commercial areas are designated into different zoning areas and are maintained by different contractors. The contractors’ contact details are as follows: Zone 2 by Syarikat Kiu Chiong Liong Contractor at contact number 016-5227330, Zone 3 by Bungai Nuing Services Co. at contact number 017-2173793, Zone 4 by A&L Company at contact number 010-9810666, and Zone 5 by Syarikat Kassim Bina at contact number 010-9622002.
Regarding drain clearance and flushing services, Ting said that all perimeter drains in the town center, including office blocks and shophouses, are cleared and flushed once a month using high-pressure jetting trucks and vacuum/desludging trucks by SMC contractor, Pencak Mekar Sdn Bhd at contact number 019-8888185.
All other urban and suburban commercial areas will be maintained by SMC drain maintenance team using flushing trucks once every 45 days.
Ting warned all business operators not to dispose or cause to dispose or discharge any waste, whether solid or liquid, directly or intentionally into any council drain, which may affect efficient drainage or cause such drain to be polluted, clogged, or blocked.
He also advised all food and beverage business operators to install grease traps or food sieves where necessary and applicable to prevent food waste from being discharged into any council drain, which may affect efficient drainage or cause such drain to be polluted, clogged, or blocked.
Ting explained that all bin sites or SMC bin centers within commercial services are provided by way of refuse collection and scavenging services.
SMC contractors maintain the bins, bin sites, or bin centers and surrounding public spaces or drains periodically or based on feedback from business operators or the public.
The contact details for the contractors are as follows: Toh Ah Kaw Contractor Sdn Bhd at contact number 010-5205411 for Zone 1 and 4, Syarikat Seni Bumi Contractor at contact number 016-2362626 for Zone 2, and Kiu Chiong Tiing Construction Sdn Bhd at contact number 016-8989619 for Zone 3.
Despite the Council’s efforts, Ting urged the public to keep public areas clean and not to throw rubbish into the drain or public area.
He also asked the public to report any issues related to street sweeping services, scavenging services, or drain clearance and flushing services to SMC’s hotline at 019-8179297, SMC cares app, or the Public Health Section frontdesk at the 20th floor of Wisma Sanyan.
