SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is facing significant challenges in finding new waste disposal sites, said its chairman Clarence Ting.
According to him, the existing landfill had almost reach its capacity.
Hence, Ting urged residents to embrace the practice of recycling to reduce waste generation and minimise the amount of garbage sent to the landfill.
“It is hard to locate a place that is suitable to turn into a waste disposal site in Sibu. Therefore, I want to emphasise the importance of recycling and waste reduction for the betterment of our city,” Ting said at the Run for Peace marathon, organised by Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) at the Sibu Indoor Stadium, today (July 9).
He said that to promote recycling among the public, SMC has initiated various recycling campaigns, including the purchase of recyclable waste.
Ting also hoped the government will eventually establish a well-equipped wastewater treatment plant in Sibu.
He said he had raised the issue at a recent member council seminar held in Kuching.
“One of the things that truly impressed me during my visit to Japan was the clarity of their water.
“Therefore, we aspire to ensure that our sewage undergoes proper treatment, preventing its direct flow into our rivers, and ultimately achieving the cleanliness of rivers seen in other countries,” he said.
