SIBU: Out of a total of 269 compounds issued from July 1 this year, only 145 had being settled. Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King reminded offenders who refused to settle the compounds that they could be subject to court action.
“Members of the public are encouraged to provide supporting evidence such as videos and photos to the council for stern action against litterbugs, especially those happening in the town centre,” he said. Tiong said this during the full council meeting held at SMC office here yesterday.
He urged the residential neighbourhoods to keep an eye and to immediately report on illegal dumping happening within their residential area.
On another matter, he praised operators of supermarkets, outlets and other merchandisers for being supportive on the ‘Say No to Plastic Bags’ campaign since its implementation last Oct 1.
“We observe that members of public are keen to bring along their shopping bags and to utilise the paper boxes prepared by the supermarkets,” he said, adding that the council will extend the campaign to all wet markets in the move towards a more environmental friendly society.
