SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) have been appointed by the Ministry for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) to lead the World Earth Day 2024 campaign.

According to organising chairman Toh Yong Kiang, the theme for this year’s campaign will be “Planet vs Plastics” and will be launched at Permai Lake Garden on April 20.

“The event includes tree planting, cycling cum plogging, and an opening ceremony officiated by SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh,” he said at a press conference here on Friday (April 5).

The public are encouraged to come and join in the cycling activity at Permai’s bicycle lane by scanning the attached QR Code; registration is free, and participants are entitled to a mystery gift (limited to 80).

“Furthermore, a waste-to-wealth campaign will take place at the shaded car park below Wisma Sanyan, offering cash for used electronic and electrical goods.”

He added that SMC will collaborate with several NGOs, including Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sibu, Sibu Family Life Association, Sibu Enoch Elderly Association, Sibu Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, KRT Daerah Nang Nang, and also other KRT/JKKK groups.

“Together, they will implement a series of programmes over the next few months, focusing on initiatives such as Go Green Warrior 2024, Love In Action 1.0, educational awareness talks, and monthly waste-to-wealth campaigns in various residential areas.”

He noted that several restaurants and hotels in town will be actively involved in these efforts.

“Lastly, on behalf of the organising committee, I would like to thank all our community for the full support over the past many years to protect our environment, our mother earth, and for the future of our younger generation. Let us work together to make a better Sibu.”
