SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has made the installation of LED (light-emitting diode) street lighting a top priority, focusing primarily on commercial areas and main roadways.
Its chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh said the council is actively implementing LED lighting across 20 different projects.
“But priority is given to commercial areas and main roads; only after that will we do it in residential areas,” he said in his keynote address at the council’s full board meeting here yesterday (September 29).
Ting listed the priority areas for this initiative, including Jalan Lanang, Jalan Lada, Jalan Salim, as well as commercial areas like Sungai Merah, Farley, Rejang Park, and Delta.
“Our purpose is to brighten up these areas. For residential areas, we might have to consider it first, as people might complain of the strong glare from this sort of lighting,” he stressed.
Earlier in July, Ting was reported saying that the council would install a total of 388 LED lights at a cost of RM387,000.
Also present were SMC Deputy Chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley and SMC Secretary Yong Ing Chu, among others.
