SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting and Bukit Assek assemblywoman Irene Chang visited Jalan Amoy here on Wednesday (Aug 5) to assess the flooding problem.
There have been complaints that the road was not properly upgraded, which led to flooding.
“This morning, Irene and I visited the site. I talked to the resident concerned.
“He (resident) said since SMC upgraded the road, the flooding got worse. According to the resident, the contractor covered the existing culvert.
“I found that the culvert actually drained into private land. All the wooden houses were built before independence, (and) are right up to the edge of the road with no drain reserve,” said Ting.
“I can see from the side, it stretches to the rear boundary of the land. There is no drain reserve.”
“This morning, Irene and I agreed that two culverts be built, but after discussing, I found that water from the right side will inundate the left side of the road, which may worsen the flooding on one side.
“SMC will check with the Land and Survey Department, to see if there are any other possible solutions,” Ting assured.
