SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) plans to be the first local authority in Sarawak to introduce a smart vehicle parking system.
Its chairman, Clarence Ting Ing Horh, said that unlike other local councils that have hired contractors to manage parking, SMC has been taking care of it on their own.
Ting expressed the council’s readiness to implement the system, stating that they recently visited Penang to learn about its implementation.
“After our meeting in Penang, we need to push for it and be the first local authority in Sarawak to adopt this system. The council only requires approval from the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government to proceed,” he said during the SMC meeting held today (June 27).
In the meantime, chairman of Work and Traffic Committee, Councillor Ting Hua Sing, said that the council will not bear the expenses for the system’s facilities and software.
Instead, the contractor will be responsible for providing these resources.
“We will form a joint-venture with them, where we will share the income from parking fees for seven years. After that, the council will take over the system’s management,” he explained.
Under the proposed smart parking system, motorists will need to download a mobile application to pay for their parking fees.
