SMK Oya holds Career, Education Expo 2018

OYA: It was another successful Education and Career Expo for SMK Oya on Wednesday morning.

The event was held by the school in collaboration with the Special Project Committee of Dalat Constituency and the Sarawak Foundation.

The one-day Expo saw the participation of various learning institutions and other relevant agencies from the area.

Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah was the guest-of-honour at the event.

At the event, Fatimah who is also the assemblywoman for Dalat presented the Dalat Champ cash awards to several schools in the area which participated in the Sarawak Innovation, Invention and Design Expo (SIIDEX).

The Gold Award recipients were SK Datu Pengiran Mohamad Oya (RM1,000),  SK Sungai Kut Tengah Dalat (RM750) and SK St Bernard, Dalat (RM500).

SK Kampung Senau Oya received RM250 for winning the silver award (also at SIIDEX) while SMK Dalat received RM3,000 for entering the Malaysia Book of Records for coming up with the longest Mind Map Banner over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Roziah Ayub from Kpg Sungai Kut Tengah who emerged the female champion at the state-level Al Quran recitation competition recently received RM2,000. Roziah will represent Sarawak at the national-level event.

Besides the cash incentives, Fatimah also handed over MRP allocations to Dalat District Office for its RANDO Dalat Activity (RM10,000), Dalat District Education Office (RM10,000) and Dalat Community Based Rehabilitation Centre (RM21,000).

The minister also distributed MRP funds to various school Parent-Teacher-Associations (PTAs) in her constituency.

SMK Dalat and SMK Oya received RM10,000 each while SK Datu Pengiran Mohamad, SK Sungai Ud, SK St John Kampung Medong  and SJK Chung Hua received RM5,000 each. Thirteen other primary schools in the consitutency received RM3,000 each.

In her speech, Fatimah congratulated the organisers of the expo for providing an avenue for STPM and SPM students and their parents to understand more about the education and career opportunities available.

“The expo provides counseling for the school leavers on the respective directions they could take based on their examination results.

“It also allows the students and parents to have face to face dialogue with the participating institutions and agencies,” she said.

Also present were SMK Oya Principal Malihah Sirat, SMK Dalat Principal Magdaline Jon, Temenggong Hendi Suhai, community leaders and representatives from schools in the area.
