BAU: The Sarawak Delta Geopark Public Education and Community Participation Working Group has proposed appointing SMK Paku as one of its Geopark Adopted Schools, in line with the UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) definition.
SMK Paku, located in an area surrounded by mineral rocks that are millions of years old, holds significant geological value and makes it an ideal candidate for the initiative.
This proposal was highlighted during the geotalk briefing programme at SMK Paku on Tuesday (Sept 10) organised by the working group.
The Sarawak Delta Geopark (SDGp) was recognised by the National Geopark Committee as Malaysia’s 6th National Geopark on June 20, 2022.
It spans 311,246 hectares, covering both land and coastal areas in the Kuching district, Bau district, Padawan sub-district, and Siburan sub-district.
Meanwhile, the geotalk briefing programme is a key initiative aimed at helping the community, especially young people, understand the importance of geoparks.
The programme is expected to positively impact students by enhancing their knowledge of the environment, geological history, and heritage preservation for global recognition.
