KAMPAR: Four hundred bamboo sticks were used to create a replica of a nest of weaver bird (burung tempua), measuring 10m in height and six metres in width, which has been certified as the largest invention by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).
The replica was the result of four months of hard work of 700 students and 100 teachers of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Kampar here with the help of 40 local residents.
According to its project director, Muzafar Saari, the construction of the replica began in early May and completed on Aug 18.
“We also used half a tonne of iron rods; 12,000 pieces of nails; a lorry full of the sago palm leaves, as well as wires and plastic ropes to produce the replica with a total cost of RM18,340 received from the donation of various parties including individuals,” he told Bernama.
The certificate was presented by MBOR chief operating officer Christopher Wong to the school headmaster, Mohamad Azhar Ariffin, at Malaysia’s Largest Weaver Bird Nest Replica unveiling ceremony at the school, here, yesterday.
According to Muzafar, who is also a visual arts teacher, the weaver bird nest was chosen to gauge the students’ creativity in producing a replica in accordance to the weaver bird’s unique weaving method.
In addition, he said, students were able to develop their natural talents and artistic creativity as well as creating an exciting learning environment through the project.
He said the project was also seen to foster a sense of friendship and a spirit of cooperation between the school and the local community.
Muzafar noted that among the challenges faced in producing the replica was the difficulty of obtaining durable leaves as well as the unpredictable weather. – Bernama
