MIRI: SMK St Joseph Miri clinched the championship title at the Under 19 Inter-Team pickleball tournament held recently at the MYY Mall Pickleball Sports Arena.
They defeated Knewton Global Schools Miri 3-1 in a thrilling final.
The winning team was awarded a championship trophy, USA Pickleball-approved pickleball paddles, and a portable net system.
Pei Min Middle School secured third place after defeating SMK St Columba 3-2.
Seven teams from five schools participated in the tournament, which brought together some 50 players.
Miri Division Pickleball Association president Yvonne Sim said the association plans to organise this school tournament annually to foster interest and develop talent in pickleball among local schools.
“As pickleball is set to feature in upcoming major sports events, these tournaments are crucial in preparing our athletes.”
The event was supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which provided funding.
The sponsors were Nestle Milo and Odysportsz. Chia Kah Fung, representing Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting; and
Stephanie Wendy Stamford from the Ministry of Youth and Sports Miri presented the prizes to the winners.
