SIBU: A total of 358 compound notices amounting to RM89,500 have been issued by the Sibu Divisional Health Office from Jan 1 to Sept 17 this year.
The compounds were issued under the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 following inspections on 179 food premises.
A spokesman for the Divisional Health Office said there has been an increase in the number of compounds issued, compared to 136 notices during the same period last year, marking an increase of 163 per cent.
“These compound notices were issued to individuals who violated the smoking ban at public eating places.
“Each compound notice carries a fine of RM250. Failure to pay the compound will lead to court action.
“Any individual found guilty can be fined up to RM10,000 or imprisoned for up to two years,” the spokesman said.
In addition, the health office said premises owners who fail to comply with regulations can also face action under Regulation 12(1)(a) and Regulation 12(1)(b).
“Under Regulation 12(1)(a), (owners can be) fined up to RM3,000 or imprisoned for up to six months.
“Whereas, under Regulation 12(1)(b), (owners can be) fined up to RM5,000 or imprisoned for up to one year,” the spokesman said.
Smoking can increase the risk of respiratory diseases, including asthma, bronchitis, and lung inflammation, as well as a higher risk of diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease and stroke.
“If a restaurant is crowded with smokers, it is best to avoid it; you can go elsewhere. Those who are willing to quit smoking, can visit clinics for the quit smoking programme,” the spokesman added.
