BINTULU: Nomination for the Jepak state by election went on smoothly without any untoward incident today (Oct 21).
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said a total of 216 officers and personnel were assigned to ensure the process of the nomination for the by-election was conducted peacefully, safely and smoothly.
He said the police would ensure that aspects of security and order in Sarawak, especially Bintulu, are controlled and safe throughout the by-election period.
“I advise the contesting candidates to discuss with the district police chief to apply for campaign permits to enable them to conduct their campaigning during the prescribed campaigning period from today until 12 midnight on November 3 before the polling day on November 4,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters at the Bintulu Civic Centre nomination centre here on today (Oct 21).
Mohd Azman also called on the public to be responsible social media users and not to publish or spread fake news, especially during the by-election campaign period.
“Any offender will be investigated by the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM), its Commission and relevant authorities,” he said.
He added throughout the by-election period from the nomination day, campaigning, voting until post-election, a total of 624 officers were ready to assist to ensure everything goes on smoothly.
“I would also like to thank all political leaders, supporters and candidates for the smooth and safe nomination process,” he said.
The Jepak by-election will see a three cornered fight between Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) Iskandar Turkee, Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s (PBK) Stevenson Joseph Sumbang and Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) candidate Chieng Lea Phing.
