KUCHING: Preparations for the closing ceremony of the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024 are progressing smoothly, according to SUKMA’s chief executive officer Datuk Hii Chang Kee.

The event, set for tomorrow (Aug 24), will feature various programmes throughout the day.

“We understand that some sports events will still be ongoing in the morning, but the closing ceremony is scheduled for 8.30 pm at Stadium Perpaduan,” Hii said.

Hii said seats were limited for the public, with only 2,000 seats available due to the stadium’s configuration for the stage.

“For those unable to attend in person, the closing ceremony will be broadcast live on channels such as RTM and TVS,” he said during a press briefing after the closing ceremony rehearsal at Stadium Perpaduan on Thursday night (Aug 22).

A key highlight of the ceremony will be the handover of the SUKMA flag from Sarawak to Selangor, the next host of the 22nd SUKMA in 2026.

“Selangor will present a special performance as a gesture of taking on the responsibility of hosting the next games,” Hii said.

He hoped the performers would deliver their best. “Since SUKMA isn’t an annual event, I hope the performers give their all,” he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, accompanied by his wife Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, is expected to attend the closing ceremony, together with  Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.

The ceremony will also include the announcement of the best male and female athletes and the overall state champion.
