KUCHING: Twenty-seven undocumented immigrants and four locals were arrested while smuggling controlled food items worth over RM169,000 including a one-ton lorry, a car and a motorcycle.
According to a spokesperson of the Malaysian First Infantry Division, a team from the 10th Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment foiled the smuggling attempt through Tebedu around 7.30pm on Tuesday night.
“The suspects comprise 20 males and seven female Indonesians plus four locals — three males and one female. They were travelling in a sports utility vehicle, a motorcycle and a one-ton lorry when they were stopped by soldiers about 600 metres from the Indonesian border,” he said in a press statement issued yesterday.
When the soldiers checked the vehicles they found the controlled goods — onions, sausages, fish Marukku snacks and frozen beef — plus RM27,500 in cash, which they confiscated.
The suspects including a Hino lorry, a Volkswagen Toureg car and a Honda Wave motorcycle were taken to Serian police station for further action.
