KUCHING: Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng is all for the idea of setting up a casino here.
He said having a casino may be controversial but a bold move which will spur the state’s tourism and hospitality industry manifolds.
“I am coming out in support because of the economic spin-offs and job opportunities that could benefit the state,” he said in his Facebook post, on Sunday.
“Singapore alone was able to create 10,000 new jobs through this industry.
“I am not suggesting or encouraging locals to gamble but this could be a tourist attraction for foreigners especially those from mainland China.”
He said safeguards however would have to be in place to limit the exposure of locals.
“I take my hat off to Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Roland Sagah for raising this possibility,” he added.
Sng was reacting to Karim not ruling out out such possibility in redeveloping the Borneo Highlands area in Padawan.
“It can be a good idea if regulated properly because Singapore can do it. I don’t see why not, as long as it does not lead to big social problems,” he said, adding the decision however was for the state government to make.
