BINTULU: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will implement licensing for social media services and Internet messaging platforms starting Jan 1, 2025.
Sarawak information director Helmy Hamid said that all social media and Internet messaging platforms registered in Malaysia, such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and Telegram, will need to apply for an Application Service Provision Class Licence under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).
He explained that this regulation aims to address the rising cases of cybercrime, including online fraud, cyberbullying and sexual crimes against children.
However, he clarified that this licensing only applies to platforms that meet the licensing eligibility requirements and does not involve individual social media users.
“This step is taken to create a safer online environment and provide a better experience, especially for children and families.”
He made these remarks during the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) programme at the Bintulu Port wharf here on Monday (Aug 26).
Earlier, Helmy, along with Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming, performed a symbolic flag-off for the Fun Ride KMJG participants at the Tanjung Batu Beach parking lot.
A total of 25 Bintulu Madani Community committee vehicles, three Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad vehicles, and 100 cycling participants, with a total of 184 participants, took part in the Fun Ride KMJG, which started from Tanjung Batu Beach and ended at Bintulu Port.
