KUCHING: Since March 2024, the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) has funded the upgrading of facilities at the Paediatric Oncology Ward in Sarawak General Hospital, amounting to a total of RM50,390.

A water purifier, a dryer, and a washing machine were added to enhance the facilities for the children and their caregivers.

This initiative followed a thorough inspection by the medical team to identify urgent needs for improving the ward’s conditions and providing a better treatment experience for children with cancer.

Ward 2A of the Paediatric Oncology Ward, which treats children under 18 years of age from across Sarawak, currently accommodates between 15 and 20 active patients, with a peak capacity of 28. With this latest investment, SCCS aims to create a more comfortable environment to support the holistic healing of young patients.

“We believe that a positive atmosphere not only benefits the children and their families but also the dedicated medical staff. This is part of our commitment to supporting Sarawak’s children with cancer,” said SCCS President Mary Kiu.

The upgrades include essential equipment such as washing machines, dryers, water filters, water heaters, and air conditioners, with the total investment amounting to thousands of ringgit. This initiative builds on SCCS’s previous efforts in 2023, where over RM86,000 was spent on improvements at several other hospitals in Sarawak.

As a non-profit organisation, SCCS incurs an annual expenditure of nearly RM2 million, with approximately 50 to 60 per cent of its funds derived from public donations and corporate partnerships. In addition, SCCS provides a range of support services, including financial assistance, accommodation, counselling, and recreational activities, to alleviate the burden on patients’ families.

Since its establishment in 2001, SCCS has assisted over 1,700 families across Sarawak.
