TEBEDU: A local man’s attempt to smuggle 1,500 cartons of cigarettes out to a neighbouring country, was foiled by the armed forces last night (May 13).
The First Infantry Division said the incident happened around 10.30 pm at an abandoned warehouse, which is identified as an illegal route, about 900 metres from the Malaysia-Indonesia border.
During routine patrol, a team of soldiers spotted a van with suspicious loads heading towards Indonesia and detained it for inspections.
“It led to the discovery of 30 boxes inside black plastic bags stored in the van and the boxes contained 1,500 cartons of various cigarettes.
“All the goods, valued at RM95,000, are believed for Indonesia. A police report was filed at Tebedu police station and the driver along with the seizures were handed over to the police for further action,” the division said.First Infantry Division Commander Major General Datuk Mohamed Fauzi Kamis congratulated the team of soldiers, who foiled the smuggling attempt.
He assured similar operations will be conducted from time to time to curb smuggling of goods and prevent intrusions into the neighbouring country.
