ABU DHABI: The status of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) as sole gas aggregator in Sarawak will be announced soon, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“We will announce in the near future,” he said briefly during an interview following a networking breakfast with Mubadala Energy executives at Emirates Palace, Mandarin Oriental here today.

Previously, he revealed that discussions between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and PETROS regarding natural gas distribution in Sarawak had concluded.

On October 31, Abang Johari said Petronas had agreed in principle and would send an official letter regarding the agreement to the Sarawak government.

Earlier, the state government had given PETRONAS a three-month deadline until October to resolve the gas distribution issue with PETROS.

Abang Johari had previously said that Sarawak operates under two laws pertaining to natural gas distribution, namely the Petroleum Development Act 1975 (PDA) and the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 (OMO).

He said effective from July 1 this year, PETROS was granted full authority to regulate gas distribution in Sarawak.

However, Petronas requested a delay in the takeover due to concerns it could impact gas distribution to the LNG Plant in Bintulu.
