KUCHING: Whether or not something big is going to happen in Pakatan Harapan (PH) will only be known on February 21, the day the ruling coalition’s presidential council meeting is held.
Political analyst at the Department of Sociology, University of Malaya, Associate Professor Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi, said the “big thing” would probably be discussed at the meeting.
He said the council was being pressured to be more assertive in their discussion with regards to the transition of power and the need for the issue to be discussed specifically.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir has said that he would hand over the premiership to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after the Apec meeting in November.
However, there are calls for him to be more specific such as how many days, weeks or months after that meeting.
Awang Azman said the issue should be discussed at the council meeting.
“Why wait after the Apec meeting? Why can’t Anwar be prime minister before the meeting?” he asked.
Awang Azman also questioned why it is so important for Dr Mahathir to be at the Apec meeting for the second time as prime minister.
On speculations that some people are signing a statutory declaration (SD) in support of Dr Mahathir remaining as prime minister for a full term, Awang Azman said the SD should be made public immediately.
“If it is not made public now then there is no truth in it. Perhaps it is just to heat up the country’s politics,” he said.
