KUCHING: The Sarawak Oil Palm Plantation Owners Association (Soppoa) met with the Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, in a pivotal government-industry engagement aimed at addressing pressing issues within the palm oil sector in Sarawak on Oct 16.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment to tackling the challenges facing the industry, particularly the need to adapt to stringent environmental regulations.

“A major focus was on the necessity for advanced technologies to comply with these regulations, especially concerning by-product management and emissions control.

“Current practices often fall short of environmental expectations, increasing pressure on operators,” said Soppoa chairman Eric Kiu Kwong Seng through a press statement, today (Oct 17).

Dr Hazland showcased a proactive approach by proposing several short- and long-term strategies designed to assist the industry.

“His commitment to engaging with stakeholders aims to identify and implement practical, sustainable solutions that align with environmental goals,” he said.

Soppoa expressed appreciation for Dr Hazland’s initiatives and looks forward to ongoing collaboration to enhance environmental sustainability in the state.
