MUKAH: A set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) is being proposed by the Sarawak government to empower community leaders to better serve their people.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department ― Corporate Affairs and Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) Abdullah Saidol said the proposal was initiated by Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg who would make an announcement on the matter soon.
According to Abdullah, who is also Semop assemblyman, the SOPs will be implemented through the village development and security committee (JKKK).
“When the SOPs are introduced, the role of JKKK is getting more important,” he said when speaking at Ukas@Community N57 Tellian ceremony at Mukah New Administrative Centre (SCORE Building) here Saturday.
Abdullah said based on the SOPs, the chief minister proposed that certain amount of allocation be given to JKKK to enable them to implement certain development projects in their respective areas.
He added the proposed SOPs would also empower JKKK to appoint a committee comprising representatives from District Office, Public Works Department (JKR) and other relevant bodies, to help implement a project which will be known as Projek Gotong-Royong JKKK.
He said while JKKK have been empowered to help implement a project, District Office, JKR and other agencies concerned must help in monitoring the project to ensure it is being carried out smoothly and transparently.
Abdullah revealed that based on the new policy (proposed SOPs), JKKK could also appoint a competent contractor to carry out the Projek Gotong-Royong JKKK, after discussing the matter in its meeting.
The ceremony, the first one held here after the movement control order (MCO) since March 18, was organised by Ukas. Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo, Ukas special administrative officer Datuk Takun Sunggah who represented Ukas director, Mukah Division Resident Hamdiah Bakir, Mukah District officer Shaferi Saili and community leaders also attended the event.
