KUCHING: October 2019 marked the first time a Spartan Race — a 20km —10 obstacle course race — was held in Sarawak, drawing athletes from around the world.

The race will make its eagerly-awaited return this year on June 11 and 12.

The Spartan Race is a test of physical, mental and spiritual strength, and this year is no different.

After the success of 2019, Spartan Race Sarawak 2022 has upped the ante, offering athletes three different courses to choose from – the Spartan Sprint (a 5km, 20 obstacle race), the Spartan Super (a 10km, 25 obstacle race) and the Spartan Combo (Sprint and Super).

The categories are Open — for everyone, from novice athletes to first-timers, and Elite — for serious athletes competing to win prize money.

The venue will be the Leadership Institute of Sarawak Civil Service here.

Haiyanti Ibrahim, a Sarawakian who ranks eighth in Asia in the women’s Beast Top Elite Racers of 2016, migrated from being a mere enthusiast to becoming a professional fitness and obstacle race trainer.

She urged everyone to experience a Spartan Race at least once in their lives.

She currently runs all her programmes at her gym, Knight Performance Training Centre.

Expressing the impact and value of the race, she explains: “Imagine what five hours of finding your way through the jungle (that’s how long I had to endure during my 21km challenge in 2018)…and given that the only choice you have is to get through every single obstacle in front of you, and the fulfilment that awaits at the finishing line.”

“It changed my life, my career and my character, and helped me get through a time of grief and hardship,” she added.
