Special children to showcase art at Plaza Merdeka

KUCHING: The Kuching Association of Talent Development and Welfare of Special Needs (KATSN) will hold a Gifted Art Exhibition in conjunction with the Charity Mid-Autumn Festival from Sept 22 – Oct 1 at Plaza Merdeka here.

KATSN adviser Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok said the Art Exhibition will feature 13 exceptionally talented artists from KATSN.

“They will share their talents with us and show us that even with their conditions and challenges, they can be talented in their arts and crafts,” he told a press conference here, Sunday (Sept 10).

Apart from painting, Sim said they will also showcase their basket weaving and mooncake making skills which will all be up for sale.

“I pray for your support in whatever we can to assist these special children and young adults,” he added.

The 13 artists from KATSN are Kelvin Li, Alister Sim, Lee Jia Rong, Bertrand Arthur, Darryon Leong, Rachel Lee, April Lee, Steven Hwang, Dave Hwang, Carson Chang, Brian Lin, Damian Clarke and Xavier Jee.

Sim said various programmes have been lined up in conjunction with the festival such as the nightly art exhibition, children’s colouring contest, live performances, cheongsam contest, kids karaoke competition, lantern competition and a mooncake making contest.

“A halal mooncake making contest will be held on Sept 24, headed by master chef Goh Ah Seng of Hoi Tin Lau Restaurant.

Sim said the programme coincides with the vibrant Carpenter Street Mid-Autumn Festival and the Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah is expected to attend the festival in Plaza Merdeka on Sept 25.

Meanwhile, Plaza Merdeka in a press statement said they are collaborating with various tenants including Parkson, Rock & Roll, Magic Bites and Zero O’clock to enhance the festival experience.

For budding artists and singers, Kids Colouring Contest will take place on Sept 24 while the Kids Karaoke Competition is set for Sept 30.

The Kids Cheongsam Competition is set for Sept 29 at 7pm. Those interested in participating can contact John at 012-8806560 or Pung at 012-8865396.

There are also limited stalls offering lanterns, toys, mooncakes, balloons, ice cream and crafts.
