MIRI: A special committee under the Miri Division Resident’s Office has been set up to resolve flash floods in Miri District.

This was announced by Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin who is also Minister-in-charge of Miri Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) after chairing a meeting of Sarawak Asset on Siltation Issue of Lutong River here on Friday (Sept 17).

He noted that areas around Kampung Senadin Jaya, Kampung Sealine, Kampung Merikan, Jalan Senadin, Miri Crude Oil Terminal (MCOT), Kampung Damai Jaya, Jalan Maigold, Promin Jaya, Desa Senadin, and Senadin Industrial Area were often hit by flash floods.

“One of the main causes is the siltation of Lutong River. Every year, the areas often face flood problems especially during high tides that coincide with heavy rains, causing low-lying areas to be flooded.

“Due to the fact that part of Sungai Lutong is located in the Petronas restricted area, the clean-up of Sungai Lutong is difficult to carry out,” he said.

Lee also revealed that during the meeting, relevant agencies present long-term and short-term solution proposals to protect and reduce the risk of recurrent floods.

“I hope that the management of Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd can work with the relevant agencies to resolve the issue immediately as the monsoon season or take-off will arrive soon,” he expressed.
