SIBU: The 6th Special Olympics Sarawak is a memorable and historical one, said Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
“It is historical in many ways. On the opening night, we were given the opportunity to use the Azman Hashim Community Sport Centre.
“Meanwhile, at tonight’s closing ceremony we have had the opportunity to use the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).
“So, this year is a very historic year for our Special Olympic State Games as we could hold both ceremonies at two prestigious places,” she said at the closing ceremony of the 6th Special Olympics (SO) Sarawak State Games on Saturday.
Fatimah expressed her gratitude to Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and his wife, Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang for their willingness to come to Sibu and officiate at the opening ceremony.
“This shows the strong support of our Premier and the Sarawak government for our Special Olympics since it was organised by us in 1998.
Apart from that, Fatimah also deemed the 6th Special Olympics Sarawak State Games a great success.
“Today we have been able to identify new potential athletes who could actually join our Para Sukma and become potential medal winners.
“After this we will help to identify and build the capacity so that one day, they will be not only a state champion but also a national and international champion,” she stressed.
The Dalat Assemblywomen also expressed her gratitude to all who were involved and contributed to the success of the event.
Fatimah revealed that the venue for the 7th special Olympic state games will be in Miri in 2024.
