KUCHING: The state government takes a serious view on the issue of a cartel which had been importing meat with a fake halal logo.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said a special task force will be formed comprising government enforcement department and agencies to address the matter.
“The special task force will comprise Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS), Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (Jais), Sarawak Veterinary Services Department (DVSS), Sarawak Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP), Sarawak Chemistry Department (Kimia Sarawak), Sarawak Health Department (JKNS), Sarawak Immigration Department and Islamic Development Department (Jakim),” he said during a press conference after chairing a special meeting with halal enforcement committee at Majma Tuanku Abdul Hali Mua’zam Shah Building here at Jalan P Ramlee today.
While there were no arrests linked to the scandal, he urged members of the public, especially Muslims to be more attentive when buying products.
“The state government encourages users to be more attentive when buying products and to authenticate their halal status using smartphones if there are any doubts.
“At the same time, they can also be our eyes and ears in combating the matter by reporting any product with fake halal logos,” he said.
When asked if there are companies involved in the fake halal meat certification issue, he said the Jais enforcement team has been on the ground to monitor the premises.
He said the enforcement had discovered that a few premises were found to be selling frozen chicken meat from certain countries that had been suspended.
