KUCHING: A special team will be established to address the claims brought up by the heirs of Sultan Jamalul Kiram II (Sultan of Sulu) against the Malaysian government.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the team would be tasked to study, monitor and formulate appropriate legal action to address the issue.
“The government takes this seriously as it undermines the interests of the country’s assets abroad, especially assets under government-linked companies.
“Therefore, the government will take proactive and aggressive action in addressing this issue in order to defend the country’s assets and sovereignty,” he emphasised.
The team, led by Wan Junaidi himself, also consists of Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah, Attorney-General Tan Sri Idris Harun along with experts related to international arbitration.
In light of this, he stated that the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) together with the Attorney-General’s Chambers were determining the terms of reference as well as additional members if necessary for the team.
“The BHEUU and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will act as the secretariat of this special team.”
