KUCHING: The parade in conjunction with Sarawak 60th Anniversary Independence Celebration at Padang Merdeka here today received an extraordinary response from the community in Sarawak when about 10,000 visitors came to witness the parade competition.

In fact, the parade was further enlivened when representatives of the contingents that followed the parade carried banners and flags of Sarawak and their respective teams in addition to wearing patriotic and tribal themed attire found in this state.

New Sarawak Tribune spoke to some of the spectators at the venue to get their comments and views on the celebration.

This parade is a reflection of unity not only between the bumiputeras of Sarawak but also between the Indian and Chinese communities who live in Sarawak. As a Sarawakian, I am very proud of the spirit of tolerance that has been instilled in the community in this state.

A parade like this gives a new experience to the general public to learn more about the existence of various government departments and agencies. This is because, in addition to showcasing the spirit of unity in Sarawak, this event can reveal to the general public about some departments or agencies that are not often heard about.

Every year my husband and I do not miss the opportunity to celebrate Sarawak Independence Day, but this year the number of visitors was so extraordinary. It is hoped that Sarawak will progress and prosper under the administration of Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg. If possible, it is hoped that the government can help increase the people’s income in line with the recognition of Sarawak as a high-income state by the World Bank.

This is my first time participating in the parade. Even though the weather is quite hot, seeing the support of the visitors when every time a parade, band or parade passes in front of them, you will hear cheers given by the visitors and it is very fun.
