KUCHING: Malaysia cannot afford to have the ongoing political instability to exacerbate the deterioration of the economy.
Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) secretary-general Jonathan Chai said the world economy had yet to recover from the negative impacts of the trade war between the US and China, and now the country is fighting against the spread of Covid-19.
“Personally, I think the public in general are getting sick of all the politicking or power games which have been going around in the country,” he said when asked to comment on how the political uncertainty would affect the country’s economy.
He said leaders should pool their resources and time in stimulating or salvaging the deteriorating economy rather than creating more uncertainties which would deter any potential foreign investment from coming into the country.
“I think the elected representatives should respect the mandate given by the people. They are elected by virtue of their representation of a political alliance and their manifesto in the election,” he said.
He said if the existing alliance could no longer work together, the best way was to resolve Parliament and return the mandate to the people.
“They may not be wrong legally to dissolve the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government and regroup with other political parties to have the requisite majority to form a new government, but I think it would be intolerable and unacceptable morally if this happened and they certainly owe an explanation to the voters.
“It’s sad to see the political situation in this country has turned into such a chaotic mess, especially when we placed high hopes just over two years ago that we would have a transformed nation with the new government voted to power,” he said.
Chai said apparently, the future still looked gloomy after what it had been through for the past two years.
