KUCHING: Sometimes, don’t you wish the heroes you admired are out there somewhere, saving the day, interacting with the people or even showing up just to say hello?
Well, as luck would have it, you may catch a glimpse of everyone’s friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man near the 3rd Mile Interchange roundabout here.
Clad in the iconic red and blue suit, ‘Toby’, affectionately known as ‘Spider-Man’, makes his presence known to passing motorists, waving, performing notable poses known across the Spider-Man franchise, and occasionally even greeting motorists in person.
“I’ve been doing this for over two months here. Before this, I was at Kuching Waterfront doing the same thing just to get rid of boredom,” he said when approached by New Sarawak Tribune.
“When I put on the suit, my problems vanish and I feel invincible wearing it,” he declared, hastening to add however that all of life’s troubles return to wear him down the moment he takes it off.
I am human just like everyone else I suppose, he said reflectively.
As for the reason he picked the Spider-Man suit, he claims to be the wall-crawling superhero’s biggest fan in the entire world.
“Since my youth, I absolutely adored Spider-Man because of his costume’s eyes, his actions, and his heroic deeds in rescuing those in need.
“Also, Spider-Man’s ability to jump extremely high and the way he shoots his webs in the movies which, to me, was the coolest thing I have ever witnessed,” Toby added.
In this instance Toby does not show much interest in wearing any other superhero costume.
“I have tried wearing Superman’s costume, but I felt it was not that cool. I stuck with Spider-Man because not only does it cover my entire face, but also his actions are simple.”
“As for Venom, I have no interest but if I ever come across him, I would challenge him head-on,” he said in jest.
Toby said all he wants of for Spider-Man fans, regardless of gender and age, to stay true to their superhero and continue supporting the witty, brave and peace-loving icon.
The next time you around the area of Kuching Waterfront or at the 3rd Mile Interchange roundabout you may just spot him.
But Toby said he appears only during certain days of the week due to the extremely hot weather recently.
