KUCHING: The increase in new positive Covid-19 cases in Sarawak is disconcerting, with Kuching declared a red zone and Lundu turning from green to yellow. As such, the community must comply strictly with the standard operating procedure (SOP) to curb the spread of the virus.

Coastal Kuching, Samarahan, and Lundu Divisional Disaster Management Committee chairman Dr Hazland Hipni noted that the community have paid little or less attention to complying with the SOP since the recovery movement control order (RMCO).

“The enforcement of compulsory use of face masks from August 1 is very important as it is noted that some people do not do this, especially in crowded areas and in public places.

“All government departments and agencies will take strict action in line with the latest directives of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC),” he said after holding a meeting via video conference with government agencies in Lundu on Tuesday.

Dr Hazland, who is also Demak Laut assemblyman, explained that the committee would continue to control and enforce the SOP more strictly to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“Restriction of movement across zones which is to be re-enforced will also be taken note of to prevent crowds during the weekend.

“Hopefully, with the collaboration of all government departments and agencies as well as increased compliance with SOP by Lundu residents, the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic can be controlled,” he said.
