BETONG: The vibrant town of Betong buzzed with energy as nearly 2,000 participants adorned themselves in their traditional attire for the one-day Betong Division-level Gawai Dayak parade on Saturday (June 10).
The participants coming from all walks of life showcased a stunning array of colours and beauty, representing various ethnic groups such as Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Malay, Orang Ulu, and even Kadazan Dusun.
They shared with New Sarawak Tribune on their experience and having the opportunity to participate in the parade.

We feel proud when we have the opportunity to show the traditional clothes of the Iban. At the same time, it is very nice to see many other races who also wear their beautiful ethnic attire. This is a heritage that should be shared with those from outside so that they know the uniqueness of Sarawak.

The Iban dress that I am wearing is my own. I collected this collection and in total this one set alone is worth more than RM1,000. This is our advantage that should be shown to outsiders, especially foreign tourists, so that they know that we still maintain the original quality of our traditional clothing.

We are glad that we are given the opportunity to wear this Orang Ulu costume that we rented. I feel very happy because it is so beautiful. Besides, when I participated in this parade, I realised that Sarawak has many different races and each has their own unique traditional attire, but our unity remains strong.
GISABEL IDELIA
I was very happy when I was given the opportunity to participate in this parade because I was able to showcase the Orang Ulu attire bought by my own mother. The price of this shirt is almost RM1,000. It is hoped that this parade will be held again next year on a larger scale so that more people can witness the beauty of Sarawak.
