KUCHING: The Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) examination will continue as scheduled, with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place to curb the spread of Covid-19 among students and teachers.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) is committed to ensuring that schools operate in a smooth, orderly and safe manner by ensuring that all the SOPs set continue to be complied with.

Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin said the situation now is also different compared to during SPM 2020 in February 2021 with more than 90 per cent of Form Five students this year fully vaccinated.

The president of Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) Adam Prakash Abdullah said the MoE has made careful and detailed planning prior to the SPM dates when asked to comment on the news.

“We understand the concern of all parties regarding students and teachers’ safety. The State Education Department has distributed SOPs for the exams.

“School administrators are aware of procedures to be implemented during the SPM,” added Prakash.

At the same time, STU called on parents to support their children during this stressful period and to make sure the students are sent for vaccination to help boost their health.

“Our SPM students have prepared well for the exams and most of them are keeping well in the hostels.

“The students are ready and anxious to complete their exams.

“It has been a long wait and we hope everyone will cooperate to make this examination a success for the students,” he said.

For that very reason, Prakash said STU do not intend to push for postponement of the exams.

Meanwhile, Prakash reminded those who are staying at home to comply with the SOPs.

“STU urges all parents to limit their children’s unnecessary movements so they will not be exposed to the virus.

“We are very aware of the surge in number of Covid-19 cases. However, we feel that this can be curbed through strict adherence to the SOPs and self-discipline.
