KOTA SAMARAHAN: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has cautioned students against being complacent about the SPM exam, as it is an important step in planning their future.

“Don’t see SPM as a trivial matter, this is the beginning of a career in life, if you don’t take it seriously then it’s hard to see your future plans,” he said.

Fadillah who is Petra Jaya MP gave the reminder at the closing of the Petra Jaya SPM Student To Achieve Results (STAR) Workshop here Saturday.

His speech was delivered by his political secretary Datuk Hamzah Ibrahim.

Fadillah said the workshop is an important platform for Form Five students to prepare themselves for life in higher education after completing the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM).
He said students should know their responsibilities in the mission to get good results for themselves.

“When we have a sense of responsibility, we can see our own commitment by being responsible for getting good results.

“In the past, if we wanted to sit for SPM, we had to pay a fee of up to RM100 for the test, unlike nowadays where opportunities are open for students.”

Having said that Fadillah told them the competition is now different and with more getting good results, there is lesser room to get better job opportunities, thus underscoring the need to take SPM seriously.

A total of 187 students representing 17 schools in the Petra Jaya area and 85 teachers participated in the workshop programme.

The SPM STAR Petra Jaya workshop is jointly organised by Nexgen Petra Jaya, the Mara University Student Representative Council Alumni Association, the Petra Jaya parliamentary office and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).
