KUCHING: One of Sarawak’s top 2018 SPM scorers, Alvin Soo Qwan Zhou who scored 10 A+ in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examinations (SPM) has received the Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship to Sunway College.

The scholarship is awarded to enrolling freshmen in recognition of their excellent academic achievements prior to admission into a new programme in Sunway College.

With the scholarship, Soo, a student from SMK Bintulu, has begun his Cambridge GCE A-Level in Sunway College this week, said the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation in a media release yesterday.

“I am delighted to receive the scholarship as Sunway College is my college of choice for several reasons. Firstly, my seniors have all told me that the lecturers and the facilities in Sunway College are top-notch and I believe this is crucial in my path to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering,” said Alvin.

“I’m very grateful to the foundation which has given me this excellent opportunity to study at Sunway College. With this scholarship, I have the chance to give my parents a break financially.

“They (my parents) have been working for 20 years to fund their three children’s education. With this scholarship, they no longer need to worry about their youngest child, and can save their money for their retirement,” added Soo, who is from a family of five.

His father Peter Soo Shaw Tiong, 54, and his mother Yet Su Ai, 55, run a small family business. His elder brother has graduated while his sister is still studying.

Soo also received a JPA (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam) Scholarship which is open for candidates who scored A+ in at least nine subjects. With the JPA Scholarship, Soo has a convertible loan sponsorship to pursue a first degree at a
university in Malaysia.

“This convenience is important to Soo because he strongly believes in a balanced lifestyle for one to be successful. For my husband and I, knowing that our son is studying in a college that is not only well-known for the quality of the lecturers but also within a safe and secure campus offers us invaluable peace of mind,” said Yet.
