SIBU: Sports tourism could be a significant economic activity for Sibu, given its central location in Sarawak, says Dr Gregory Hii.
The Sarawak Volleyball Association (Sava) deputy president noted that the town is easily accessible by road from Kuching, Bintulu, Miri, and even Lawas.
“With direct air connections to Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, and forthcoming international flights from Singapore and China, it is feasible to host international sports championships in Sibu.
“Sibu is also known for its friendly residents and affordable food,” he said on Friday (July 12).
Hii, who is also an entrepreneur, pointed out that sports events in the town are becoming increasingly well-organised.
“Sava recently hosted its first Sarawak International Volleyball Championship, featuring teams from Australia and Thailand. Hot on its heels, the National Tan Soo Do Championship is scheduled for October 2024.
“Additionally, we have the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) in August, along with numerous other local sporting events planned by various sports and clan associations.”
He added that with improved sporting facilities now in place, sports tourism is expected to thrive in Sibu.
“This will create more business opportunities and employment for locals. The potential of sports tourism is indeed immense,” he stressed.
