SIBU: The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) is set to host the Selangau Carnival 2023 at Selangau Waterfront, about 74 km away from here, from July 27-29.
Organising chairman Henry Kanyan said SRDC has obtained RM200,000 in support funds from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts.
“With this carnival, it is hoped that it will assist the community in Selangau district in terms of economy and increase their income because a total of 149 stalls have been prepared for rent.
“Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government is invited to officiate at the event’s opening ceremony at 7pm on July 27,” he told a press conference at SRDC’s premise here today (June 28).
Also present were deputy chairman of SRDC Wong Ching Yong and secretary Ng Siang Wei.
According to Kanyan, the highlight of the carnival will be the Selangau Rafting Challenge to be held on July 29 in collaboration with Grit Event Management.
He said this event will start from Rumah Seli, Nanga Senunok, Ulu Mukah, Selangau covering a distance of 29 km and will take five hours to reach the finishing point at Selangau Waterfront.
Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang will flag off the event at the jetty of Rumah Seli at 6am.
He said there will also be host of other activities during the carnival such as karaoke, futsal, blowpipe, ‘Battle of the Band’ as well as Keling and Kumang competitions.
Kanyan added that the closing of the carnival will be officiated by the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahmah Hamzah at 7pm on July 29.
