Sri Santubong petanque tournament back after two-year hiatus

KUCHING: Sri Santubong 14th Series Petanque National ‘Double’ Open Tournament 2022 will be making its comeback after two years of hiatus due to the pandemic.

The competition, co-organised by Sarawak Land and Survey Department (JTS) through the JTS Social and Sports Club (LANDAS) along with Petanque Association of Kuching Division (PSPBK) and Lea Sports Centre, will be held at Sarawak Petanque Centre, Kampung Santubong this weekend on October 22 and 23.

JTS deputy director (management) Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmood revealed that they have received 260 entries for men’s doubles and 66 entries for women’s doubles.

“The response we received this year is very encouraging and better than before. I expect the number of entries to increase before the closing date which is tomorrow (October 21) at 7pm.

“I was informed that the total prize pool is RM25,000, in the form of cash prizes, trophies and medals,” he added during the press conference of Sri Santubong 14th Series Petanque National ‘Double’ Open Tournament 2022.

Awang also said that the prize pool is bigger than before and in fact it is the highest within Malaysia.

“The objective to hold this tournament is to promote new talents to the sport of petanque and hopefully this will popularise the sport of petanque among the community.

“This tournament is open for everyone to join, whether it be players that have represented the national team, the state, the division, or even someone who is interested in the sport, they are welcomed to register.

“I was told that we have attracted participants from Brunei and also other states of Malaysia which are Sabah, Pahang, Terengganu, Perlis, and Labuan, on top of the local players in Sarawak,” he added.

The champion of the men’s doubles category will be able to bring RM6,000 and trophies back home while the champion of the women’s doubles category will be able to bag RM2,500 and trophies from the tournament.

The participation fee for men’s doubles is RM100 per pair while women’s doubles is RM80 per pair.

Additionally, the organisers will be holding a lucky draw during the event with prizes like electrical goods and bicycles are up for grabs.
