KUCHING: The Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) is reactivating its fundraising efforts for its ‘Animal Village’.

Its newly minted president Datin Dona Dury Wee urged members present during the society’s recent annual general meeting to support and help realise the upcoming new RM7 million animal village for rehabilitation, animal rights, and education management for the general public possible.

She pledged a concerted effort to support the government’s campaign in the eradication of rabies by 2025.

“The lack of fundraising activities was due to the two-year pandemic lockdown. Moreover, severe floods destroyed the shelter’s premises and equipment.

“The society anticipates the Animal Village to be ready by the end of 2024, but this is subject to the ability to raise the required funds for the construction of the centre.

“The fundraising campaign will start this year with the Christmas Charity Bazaar on Dec 4 at the Ecumenical Centre and will continue with events as well as activities throughout the year,” she said in a statement yesterday (Sept 9).

Dona revealed that the recent successful bid by SSPCA to host the Asia for Animal Conference in October 2023 will be yet another milestone for the society to continue to build and enhance awareness in animal welfare and management.

She said the conference is expected to draw some 600 delegates from 40 countries, including experts and world renowned speakers to Sarawak.

“The experts and renowned speakers will share and extend expertise in the areas of animal protection, rehabilitation, and health care,” she said.

At the same time, she expressed heartfelt thanks to outgoing chairman Rebecca De Cruz for her tireless efforts in building the SSPCA foundation as well as her support in developing several programmes for the betterment of the shelter and the society.

“We are very grateful to the concerned and caring people who have continuously come to our help in helping raise donations, funds, and the much needed food supplies to the shelter in times of need,” she added.
