KUCHING: Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) is currently trying its best to ensure stray animals at its shelter are well taken care of during the Covid-19 pandemic, despite facing a shortage of food supplies.
SSPCA president Datin Donna Drury–Wee said her current concern was the organisation facing critical shortage of supplies next month due to the movement control order (MCO) being extended until April 14.
“So far, still not too bad as far as food is concerned although we expect food donations to go down as some pet shops are closed, and with all the current financial uncertainty, people will be more cautious with their spending.
“We still have about 400 animals at the shelter, and looking after them is a full-time job for our current six staff,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.
Drury-Wee also added that she was thankful for the letter from the Department of Veterinary Services that supported the operations of veterinary services and livestock industry during the MCO period.
The department supported the operations of food supplies for pets (including raw materials), medication and related needs, and also services and support needs for the pet industry.
Currently, said Drury-Wee, SSPCA made sure that the limited food supply they have could feed all of their 400 strays throughout the MCO, and she welcomed members of the public who want to contribute.
“The public can contact us through Facebook or WhatsApp, and also can directly drop by the shelter.
“We would like to remind people that all our animals are fully vaccinated and most of them are neutered already,” she added.
Drury-Wee also added that although the organisation was not able to feed the strays on the streets, SSPCA would try its best to educate those wanting to feed them with guidelines.
“I would also like to thank the State Disaster Management Committee for allowing us to get movement approval letters for the staff and volunteers for animal shelters in Kuching and Miri,” she added.
The public can contact SSPCA via Facebook and WhatsApp (012-8580628).
