KUCHING: SMK St Anthony, Sarikei and SM Sains Kuching Utara (Sakura), Padawan have won the 27th Yayasan Sarawak Chief Minister’s Special Award for the secondary school and controlled secondary school categories respectively.
The schools received RM10,000 each which were awarded during the 27th Yayasan Sarawak Chief Minister’s Special Awards (AKKMS) ceremony held at the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here on Friday.
For the primary school category, SK Kuala Penganan, Limbang won the category of primary school with enrolments of 150 pupils and below, while SK Limbang won the category of primary school with enrolments of 151 pupils and above — each receiving RM10,000.
The principal category was won by Dr Norisah Suhaili of SM Sains Kuching Utara, Padawan, who received a cash prize of RM10,000.
Meanwhile, the headmaster category was won by Jaul Bunyau of SK Ulu Lubai. He received RM5,000.
In the teachers’ category, Leong Siew Choon from SMK Tinggi Sarikei won the secondary school academic award while Tan Lee Nguang from SJK(C) Chung Hua No. 2, Kuching won the primary school academic award.
In the open category, Khairuddin Che Ali from SK Telahak, Limbang won the pre-school category.
All three teachers received RM5,000 as their reward.
Yayasan Sarawak director Azmi Bujang speaking during the event revealed that there was a total of 19 award recipients, with two categories having no winners.
“The total cash prize amounts to RM97,000. Each winner will also receive a trophy and a certificate,” he said.
AKKMS was introduced by Yayasan Sarawak to give recognition to school administrators, teachers, and students who have shown continued excellence as well as valued contributions in all fields.
This includes improved excellence in academic or non-academic fields, as well as boosting the name of their schools be it at the state or international level.
The 27th AKKMS ceremony was officiated at by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
