SHAH ALAM: Students from St Joseph’s Private Primary School (SJPS), St Joseph’s Private Secondary School (SJPSS), and St  Joseph’s International School (SJIS) have each clinched gold in their respective categories at the prestigious Malaysia International Wind Festival 2024.

Held at the Kompleks Sukan Panasonic here on Sept 21 and 22, the event featured some of the nation’s most talented young musicians, with St Joseph’s schools emerging as standout performers. 

The SJPS Percussion Ensemble captivated the judges and audience, earning the gold award in the Scholastic A Concert Percussion Ensemble category.

The SJPS Concert Band also secured the gold award in the Scholastic A Showcase Class, demonstrating their versatility and musical prowess.

Meanwhile, the Kuching Wind Symphony, a group comprising students from St Joseph’s schools took home the gold award and the title of champion in the Open Division Concert Band Premier Class, making it a remarkable clean sweep for the schools across all entered categories.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our students. They’ve shown that with teamwork, discipline, and a passion for music, anything is possible,” said senior assistant of Student Development, Benedict JC Lo, who accompanied the students during the competition.

“This achievement is not just about winning awards; it’s about the journey and the incredible growth we’ve witnessed in these young musicians.” 

The Malaysia International Wind Festival 2024 provided a platform for top wind orchestras and percussion ensembles from across the country to compete and showcase their talent.

Despite the fierce competition, St Joseph’s schools stood out with their polished performances, reaffirming their position as one of the premier institutions for musical education in Malaysia. 

The success of the schools is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the students, the leadership and guidance of their teachers and coaches, and the unwavering support from their families and the community.

St Joseph’s Private School, in a statement, further expressed its heartfelt appreciation for the schools’ band director Wilson Tan Joo Lung, saying his leadership and commitment played a pivotal role in guiding the musicians to success.

The statement stated that their achievements at the national level are not only a proud moment for the students and their schools but also highlight Sarawak’s growing influence in the performing arts.

The students’ victories add to the state’s reputation for nurturing exceptional talent in the arts, particularly in music education. 

Following their win in Shah Alam, the students were invited to participate in a Concert Band Exchange with SM Pay Fong in Melaka.

“This event allowed them to showcase their talents on a broader platform while fostering connections with fellow student musicians. The exchange further enriched their experience, highlighting the power of music in building bridges between communities.”
